What do you enjoy most about your job?

I’m curious by nature, so one of the things I enjoy most about being a pediatrician and scientist is that I’m always learning something new.

Sometimes we meet a family whose child has a condition we don’t understand. Being able to take that question into the lab, figure out what’s going on, and use what we learn to improve their care is very rewarding.

Through CHILD, we can also study children’s health from the very beginning of life and learn how to prevent disease before it starts.

What is something about you that not many people know?
I’m a beekeeper! I keep mason bees, which are fascinating little pollinators. They’re very different from honeybees, but they’re remarkably effective at pollinating plants, and I enjoy watching them emerge each spring.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy pushing myself on my Peloton while listening to Eminem. As Eminem says, “You better lose yourself in the music,” which is pretty much how I approach a hard workout. I also enjoy gardening, keeping tropical fish, running, and spending time with my family.

What is your favourite way to unwind?

Slightly embarrassingly, when I need to de-stress, I confess to indulging in the occasional FPS game.

I also enjoy building complex LEGO sets. There’s something about getting completely absorbed in a game or a LEGO build that makes it a great way to switch off from work.
